Acclaim for the American Double
In Performance
Philip and Constantine are first-rate musicians in every way, balancing style and taste impeccably in the manner of musicians far more seasoned than they. At New England Conservatory recently they performed my four violin sonatas with seriousness, depth, authority, and humor.
Above the piano’s sparkling passagework, the violin was at times explosive, at others quiet and delicate, projecting the true spirit of Brahms across the four movements. The wonderful “Graceful Ghost” Rag by contemporary American composer William Bolcom was written in the 1970s. The musicians' feeling for syncopated rhythms, the vocal character of its finely-spun melodies, the glimmers of humor..... as well as the performers' magnificent sense of ensemble were enormously enjoyable.
I have attended performances of the American Double in which they presented sonatas by Mozart and William Bolcom. The performances featured a compelling mix of intellect and drama; in rehearsal, the players discuss, argue, and ultimately inspire each other. I find this ensemble to be provocative in the best musical tradition.
Philip Ficsor’s violin playing displays elegant phrasing, thoughtful interpretations, and a delicate handling of the instrument, along with considerable virtuosity. With contemporary music, Ficsor has a way of making new music sound familiar, and familiar music sound fresh and new. His live and recorded performances invariably convey a rare sincerity and liveliness.
On Disc
Sonatas (debut recording):
A collaboration of great precision and sensitivity.
Back to Top[Philip Ficsor and Constantine Finehouse] enterprisingly are issuing CD's on their own label... and what I've heard is stellar.
